SAT阅读中的course

摘要：在SAT阅读中，想必大家对course这个单词并不陌生，course多次在官方文件中现身，除去大家最熟知的 of course, course还真是一个“百变天后”。因为其意思众多，也是大家经常会理解错误的地方。今天，我们就一起总结一下course在阅读中的常见意思。

考点1：时间进程

TIME [singular] a period of time or process during which something happens.

during/in/throughout/over the course of something

在OG 1 - 2 Money Can’t Buy Love: Asymmetric Beliefs about Gift Price and Feelings of Appreciation这篇文章中，有这么一段：

The notion of gift-givers and gift-recipients being unable to account for the other party’s perspective seems puzzling because people slip in and out of these roles every day, and, in some cases, multiple times in the course of the same day.

送礼方和收礼方不能很好的换位思考实在让人不解，毕竟人们每天都在这两个角色间切换，有时同一天还要切换好几次。这里面的course就指的是在同一天这段时间里。

在…之中;在…期间

同时大家也经常会在题目当中读到，这样的题干：

During the course of the first paragraph, the narrator’s focus shifts from:

这种考察整体结构的题目中的course也是取这个意象。

考点2：行动:行为方式

ACTIONS [countable usually singular] an action or series of actions that you could take in order to deal with a particular situation

OG 2 - 1小说The Professor第八问选项中出现A) contrasting two hypothetical courses of action. 对比两种假设行为，这里面提到的所谓courses of action就是行为方式的意思。

考点3.方向：航向;行动方向

DIRECTION [countable usually singular, uncountable] the planned direction taken by a boat or plane to reach a place

OG 3 - 1小说The Schartz Metterklume Method第二问词汇题，

In line 2, “turn” most nearly means

A) slight movement.

B) change in rotation.

C) short walk.

D) course correction

很多同学可能会觉得D选项好奇怪，为什么要纠正“课程”呢?其实不然，这里面的course就取得方向的意思。大家想一想turn是不是也暗含了改变方向呢?所以这个也是一个很强烈的干扰项。

再来看Practice 7 - 3 , Why birds fly in a V Formation，阅读文本：

They plan to investigate how the animals decide who sets the course and the pace, and whether a mistake made by the leader can ripple through the rest of the flock to cause traffic jams.

他们计划调查动物如何决定谁设定路线和速度，以及领导者的错误是否会使其他鸟群遭殃，造成交通堵塞。

注：course之后不跟’of ’, 不能说 a course of Business Studies’. 应该是‘a course in Business Studies’。

考点5.发展：进展;进程

DEVELOPMENT [singular] the usual or natural way that something changes, develops, or is done.

PSAT 2 - 3，Yellowstone Wolves Boost Berry Diet for Grizzlies, 阅读文本：

“We’re in the early stages of this ecosystem recovery. This is what we call passive restoration,” Ripple said. “We put the wolf back in and then we let nature take its course.”

“我们正处于生态系统恢复的早期阶段。这就是我们所说的被动恢复，“Ripple说。 “我们把狼放回来，其余的就顺其自然。”

除了以上出现的这五种，course 还有菜肴(MEAL)，比赛(SPORT)，江河(RIVER)，医疗(MEDICAL TREATMENT)，墙壁(WALL)的意思，瞧瞧，一词多义到这种程度，因此背单词一定不能局限在单词书里，还要通过大量阅读，结合上下文，掌握同一单词在不同语境中的不同含义，这正是新SAT强调的“Words Within the Context”!
