Literacy is necessary——Jean-Paul Marat in the French Revolution/Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451

Literacy is not necessary——Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn/ Mao Tze-Tung and leading China to independence

Literacy is not necessary

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,还有一项根据历史的,Jean-Paul Marat in the French Revolution和Mao Tze-Tung and leading China to independence。ETS声称考生利用任何类型的论证都可以,“your reading, studies, experience, or observations”。

Christopher Reeve starred as “Superman” in 1977, making his name well-known worldwide. However, he became a real “superman” after an accident in 1995 which made him paralyzed from neck down. Believing that he never belonged to a wheelchair, Christopher Reeve did intense exercise everyday to keep his body strong in order to receive future treatments. No matter how slim the chance was for him to stand up, Christopher never wavered in his determination. Not only had he set a good example for others by fighting off a number of serious infections but also he had used his name to benefit others by establishing organizations, such as Christopher Reeve Foundation and Reeve-Irvine Research Center, which helped speed up spinal cord research and improve disabled people’s living conditions. Although he died of heart attack without recovering from paralysis in 2004, he taught others the importance of courage, persistence and optimism.

Is success in life earned or do people succeed because they are lucky?”

Can any obstacle or disadvantage be turned into something good?”

What do you think motivates people to do their best?”

Is it better for people to be realistic or optimistic?”

Is happiness something over which people have no control, or can people choose to be happy?”

Is there a value in celebrating certain individuals as heroes?”

Is identity something people are born with or given, or is it something people create for themselves?”

Is the effort involved in pursuing any goal valuable, even if the goal is not reached?”

Do we only help others in order to help ourselves in some way?”

Is striving to achieve a goal always the best course of action, or should people give up if they are not making progress?”

Is it best for people to accept who they are and what they have, or should people always strive to better themselves?”

Do society and other people benefit when individuals pursue their own goals?”

以上题目之所以可以用“超人”的故事作为论据,就是因为在面对“misfortune”(不幸地瘫痪) ,遇到“something over which people have no control”(灾难)的时候,Christopher采取了“optimistic”(不接受现实,积极改变)的态度,因此他 “choose to be happy”(选择努力去获得幸福)。尽管最终“the goal is not reached”(他没有能打败病魔),他做出的努力非常宝贵。

“Snoopy” and “Charlie Brown”, two popular cartoon characters, were born in 1950. And the creator, Charles M. Schulz, drew “Peanuts” for 50 years and kept telling the story of an admirable loser, “Charlie Brown”. This little boy always missed the goal in the last seconds, but he would try again after each failure. Such a popular character came, actually, from Mr. Schulz’s own life experience during early years. Being a slow learner, Charles failed every subject and frequently got a grade of zero for physics. And because young Charles was rather shy, timid and awkward, he seldom could make friends with other children. For Charles, the only thing that made him feel proud was drawing, though no one else appreciated him. After he graduated from high school, he decided to be a professional artist and sent his artwork to Walt Disney Studios. To his disappointment, he was refused. However, failures finally gave way to a brilliant creation when he came up with an idea to make a comic strip mirroring his life. This unique idea set him apart from other cartoonists and granted him the highest award in the history of media.

Do memories hinder or help people in their effort to learn from the past and succeed in the present?”

Is success in life earned or do people succeed because they are lucky?”

Can any obstacle or disadvantage be turned into something good? ”

Is it best to have low expectations and to set goals we are sure of achieving? ”

Do people achieve greatness only by finding out what they are especially good at and developing that attribute above all else?”

Do people learn more from losing than from winning?”

Is persistence more important than ability in determining a person’s success?”

Do highly accomplished people achieve more than others mainly because they expect more of themselves?”

Are the values of a society most clearly revealed in its popular culture?”

Are optimistic, confident people more likely than others to make changes in their lives?”

Should people be treated according to what they are capable of doing instead of what they have actually done?”

他通过漫画(一种popular culture的形式),告诉人们坚持的价值(the value of persistence), 并且也向人们证明一个暂时碌碌无为的人(what they have actually done)也有可能爆发巨大的能量(what they are capable of doing)。
